Deadly Rains Claim 26 Lives in 48 Hours Across Afghanistan

The National Directorate for Disaster Preparedness under the Taliban has reported that at least 26 people have died and 48 others injured due to severe rainfall incidents over the past 48 hours. These casualties were caused by floods, landslides, and lightning strikes in several provinces across the country.

Mohammad Yousuf Hamad, the spokesperson for the Directorate, stated that in addition to the human losses, 126 houses have been completely destroyed and 617 others sustained partial damage. Moreover, 49 shops were also damaged as a result of these events.

He added that since the 6th of Hamal (approximately late March), the total number of victims related to recent rainfall events has reached 77 dead and 137 injured. This data highlights the extensive damage caused by this year’s spring rains across different parts of the country.

Afghanistan faces the annual threat of floods and landslides during the spring season, particularly in mountainous and rural areas. These events often cause significant human and financial losses due to the lack of adequate infrastructure and preventive measures.
