UN Pledges Continued Support for Afghan Women on International Women’s Day

On International Women’s Day, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) declared its ongoing commitment to stand with Afghan women, especially internally displaced women and returnees, supporting their protection and future. The agency praised the courage and resilience of Afghan women and emphasized its sustained dedication to their welfare.
According to the UNHCR statement, Afghan women continue to strive to rebuild their lives despite extensive social and economic challenges, playing a key role in maintaining family cohesion and social stability. The High Commissioner stated that strengthening the protection and creating better prospects for these women remains a fundamental part of the agency’s mission in Afghanistan.
In recent years, displaced and returning women have confronted serious difficulties, including poverty, limited access to essential services, and social barriers. Following the Taliban’s reassertion of control over Afghanistan, widespread restrictions on women’s education, employment, and social participation have raised extensive domestic and international concerns, further complicating their situation.
International aid organizations have repeatedly warned that humanitarian improvements in Afghanistan are impossible without ensuring women’s rights and empowerment. Meanwhile, the UNHCR emphasized that its support for Afghan women extends beyond International Women’s Day, committing to stand by them and collaborate in their aid throughout the year.
