UN Secretary-General Guterres Calls for Rapid Transition to Renewable Energy in India

Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, engaged in discussions with a number of leaders from India’s industry, political, and civil society sectors during his visit to the country regarding the expansion of renewable energies. He emphasized the urgent need for fundamental and systemic changes to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and described broad cooperation among various segments of society as vital.

According to the United Nations, India is among the largest producers and consumers of energy in the world. Due to rapid economic growth and a rising population, the country faces increasing energy demand, highlighting the importance of long-term planning for a transition to clean and sustainable energy sources.

The Secretary-General also stressed that addressing climate change is impossible without structural reforms in energy systems. He characterized the roles of governments, the private sector, and civil institutions as decisive in accelerating this process.
