Taliban Supreme Court Reports Flogging of 39 Individuals in Kabul and Paktia

The Taliban Supreme Court announced that in its latest judicial actions, 39 individuals in Kabul and Paktia provinces have been subjected to corporal punishment on charges including drug trafficking and extramarital relations.

According to a statement released by the court on Tuesday, 14th of Dey, two individuals in the Seyed Karam district of Paktia province were flogged for extramarital relations. The statement added that each of these individuals was also sentenced to one year and six months in prison.

The Taliban Supreme Court further stated that in Kabul, 37 others were sentenced to prison terms ranging from eight months to three years; however, no details were provided regarding the legal proceedings, access to defense attorneys, or the transparency of the court trials.

Additionally, it has been reported that three individuals in Faryab province were flogged for similar charges. The implementation of corporal punishments, especially public flogging or executions lacking judicial transparency, once again highlights concerns about human rights violations, lack of fair trials, and the Taliban administration’s disregard for international legal standards.
