Saudi Arabia Shifts Tone on Military Option Against Iran, U.S. Officials Say
Reports indicate a shift in Saudi Arabia’s approach towards Iran, potentially impacting regional security dynamics. According to U.S. media outlet Axios, signs of a changing Saudi stance have emerged; if confirmed, this could influence the security equations in the Middle East. U.S. officials have stated that Riyadh, unlike its previous positions, is now cautiously considering the option of military action in its calculations.
These sources noted that just weeks ago, Saudi officials had urged the United States to refrain from any attacks on Iran, warning of the risk of escalating war in the region. However, more recently, these same sources reported that in recent discussions, concerns have arisen that avoiding military action might embolden Tehran.
In this context, Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman traveled to Washington for security talks regarding Iran. This visit coincides with increased U.S. military readiness in parts of the region and has drawn observers’ attention to the discrepancy between Riyadh’s official and unofficial messages.
Officially, Saudi authorities have presented a different message. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in a phone call with the Iranian president, emphasized that Riyadh would not permit the use of its airspace for attacks on Iran, respects Iran’s sovereignty, and continues to support a diplomatic solution. This position was also reflected in an official statement from the Saudi government.
However, at a Washington meeting, Saudi Foreign Minister portrayed a more cautious but distinct stance, stating that U.S. President Donald Trump, after weeks of threats, might be compelled to take military action, even though efforts should simultaneously be made to contain regional tensions.
He added that the region is at a strategic deadlock; military action could lead to dangerous and unpredictable consequences, while inaction might allow Iran to emerge from the situation with greater strength.
