Pakistan Rejects India’s Threat to Suspend Indus Waters Treaty, Warns of Regional Instability

Pakistan has dismissed India’s statements about the possible suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, calling such a move unacceptable and stating it will not allow unilateral decisions by New Delhi to damage its fertile plains. Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s ambassador to the United Nations, said at a Security Council meeting that the threat to suspend the treaty breaches international commitments and could directly impact the lives and livelihoods of millions of residents. He emphasized that Islamabad will not accept the use of water as a tool for political pressure. According to the Pakistani representative, water resources should not be turned into weapons in political conflicts, and any actions in this regard would undermine regional stability. He urged the international community to fulfill its responsibility in upholding international agreements. The Indus Waters Treaty provides a framework for managing and sharing water resources between India and Pakistan and plays a key role in reducing tensions between the two countries. Escalating disputes over the treaty have heightened concerns about environmental and humanitarian consequences.
