Colombian President Accuses US of Seeking Control Over Regional Oil and Coal

Gustavo Petro, the President of Colombia, declared that the actions and stances of US President Donald Trump indicate that Washington’s primary goal in Latin America is to control strategic resources such as oil and coal. He emphasized that Colombia does not intend to hand over these resources to the United States.

In a message posted on the X social network, Petro harshly criticized the US president, saying that Trump views genuine freedom fighters as traffickers because these countries refuse to surrender their natural resources to his demands. He described Trump’s policies as being driven by economic interests and imperial ambitions.

The Colombian president characterized Trump as a symbol of global capitalism and warned that the greed inherent in this system is pushing humanity toward crisis and destruction. According to Petro, the dominant approach in US foreign policy focuses more on seizing others’ resources than on equal cooperation.

Petro also likened Trump and his team to gold seekers during the founding era of the United States—individuals who pursued wealth regardless of borders. In another part of his speech, he rejected allegations of a drug cartel led by Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, asserting that the pressure against Maduro is motivated by a desire to gain control over Venezuela’s oil.

Furthermore, the Colombian president criticized certain approaches of global powers, stating that some groups in the world consider themselves “the chosen people,” a perspective that, in his view, fosters discrimination and instability in international relations.
