Portion of Irrigation Canal in Paktia Rebuilt with World Bank Support

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has announced that, with support from the World Bank, 2.5 kilometers of a 6.5-kilometer irrigation canal in the Balo district of Paktia province has been rebuilt, providing sustainable access to water for both households and agricultural land.

According to the information, the restored canal now delivers water to more than 12,700 local residents and supports the irrigation of over 240 hectares of farmland—an outcome critically important for the livelihoods of farmers in the area.

FAO emphasized that improving irrigation infrastructure plays a key role in boosting agricultural production, reducing vulnerability to drought, and strengthening food security in Afghanistan’s rural regions.

In recent years, Afghanistan has faced serious challenges regarding water scarcity and the deterioration of agricultural infrastructure. The continuation of such projects can address some of the urgent needs of local communities.
