Moscow and Washington Reach Preliminary Agreement for Joint Parliamentary Meeting
A senior Russian parliamentary official has announced that Moscow and Washington have reached a preliminary agreement to hold a joint meeting between members of Russia’s State Duma and the United States Congress. The time and place of this meeting are to be finalized later.
Leonid Slutsky, head of the State Duma’s Committee on International Affairs, stated that the agreement is at the initial stage, with discussions ongoing to determine the practical details. According to him, the goal of this meeting should be to achieve tangible outcomes that serve the national interests and security of both countries.
Slutsky emphasized that Russian lawmakers are not interested in symbolic, fruitless meetings. Such sessions should go beyond handshakes and photo opportunities for the media and result in concrete decisions and outcomes.
Earlier, Kirill Dmitriev, the Russian President’s special envoy for foreign investment and economic cooperation, mentioned that Moscow and Washington are consulting on the possibility of holding a meeting between delegations from the US Congress and the State Duma.
Relations between Russia and the United States have been marked by tensions in recent years, especially during Joe Biden’s presidency. Conversely, with Donald Trump currently serving as the US president, closer contacts and approaches between Washington and Moscow have helped reduce some of the mistrust between the two sides.
