Venezuela Condemns US Seizure of Oil Tankers as ‘Piracy’

The President of Venezuela’s National Assembly has condemned the United States’ seizure of several oil tankers off Venezuela’s coast, describing the action as reminiscent of ‘piracy’ during colonial times. He stated that it targets Venezuela’s sovereignty and trade.
Jorge Rodríguez reacted to the move by saying that Caracas is facing a scenario used against countries during colonial eras; a scenario that, according to him, violates the freedom of navigation and commercial exchange.
Rodríguez added that the National Assembly of Venezuela has reviewed a legislative plan to guarantee the freedom of navigation and trade against what is described as ‘piracy and blockade.’
He further noted that the National Assembly members unanimously approved this plan, an action aimed at protecting Venezuela’s economic interests and the right of free passage for ships in the country’s waters, according to Venezuelan officials.
