UN Warns of Drinking Water Shortage in Afghanistan

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) has stated that the lack of access to safe drinking water and sanitation services remains one of the serious challenges in daily life in Afghanistan.

According to the agency, water is not only a basic need but is directly linked to human dignity, public health, and the continued survival of the population. However, a large number of residents, especially those living in informal and marginal areas, have been deprived of this fundamental right.

UN-Habitat emphasized that the absence of sustainable water and sanitation infrastructure has serious health and social consequences for families, with children and women being the most affected.

The agency has called for increased coordinated efforts to provide clean water and sanitation services to all residents of Afghanistan—a demand that remains critical in the absence of effective planning and accountability from the Taliban administration, and continues to be a fundamental request of citizens and humanitarian organizations.
