WHO Conducts High-Level Mission to Review Afghanistan’s National Tuberculosis Program

The World Health Organization (WHO) ended the year 2025 with a high-level mission to review tuberculosis in Afghanistan. The mission aimed to evaluate the National Tuberculosis Program and support partner institutions in strengthening future initiatives in this sector.
According to information released by the WHO office in Afghanistan, technical experts from the organization visited Kabul, Balkh, Nangarhar, Kandahar, and Herat provinces during the mission. They examined the implementation status of the National Tuberculosis Program across various regions.
The WHO stated that the findings from this review are intended to play a key role in developing the “National Strategic Plan for Tuberculosis 2026-2030.” This plan aims to improve equitable and effective access to tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment services for all residents of the country.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s health system has faced extensive challenges in recent years. Strengthening national programs combating infectious diseases, including tuberculosis, requires sustained cooperation from international organizations and accountability from the Taliban administration in providing essential health services to the people.
