UN Highlights Urgent Needs of People with Disabilities in Afghanistan

Marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) issued a message on social media platform X, stating that approximately 1.5 million residents in Afghanistan live with serious disabilities.
According to UNAMA, many of these individuals acquired their disabilities as a result of decades of war and violence, the consequences of which have devastated the lives of millions of Afghans.
The United Nations warned that to build a better and more inclusive future, the specific needs of persons with disabilities must be considered across all sectors of society — including education, healthcare, employment opportunities, and political participation.
Over the past two years, the Taliban administration has failed to introduce clear policies to support people with disabilities. The lack of access to public services, social support, and inclusive environments for this group has raised serious concerns among human rights organizations.
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is observed annually on December 3rd to raise global awareness of the rights and needs of people with disabilities.
