Xi Jinping Visits India for BRICS Summit, Talks with Modi on Easing Tensions

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in New Delhi on Saturday, Sept. 21, to attend the BRICS summit, a trip focused mainly on talks with Narendra Modi about repairing ties after several years of border tensions.

The Chinese president is due to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the summit. According to reports, the two sides will discuss trade, investment, market access, visa restrictions and economic relations.

This is the third meeting between Xi and Modi in the past three years. It is also Xi Jinping’s first visit to India in nearly seven years.

Relations between India and China were strained for several years after the 2020 border clash in the Ladakh region. However, since 2024 the two countries have been making efforts to reduce tensions and improve ties.

China has said it wants to manage its differences with India in a constructive way and strengthen bilateral relations with a strategic, long-term outlook. The two-day BRICS summit is being held in New Delhi on Sept. 21 and 22, corresponding to Sept. 12 and 13.

BRICS is a group of major emerging economies, and its summits usually provide a platform for political and economic dialogue among members. New Delhi, the Indian capital, is hosting this round of the bloc’s leaders’ meeting.
