Indonesian Military Helicopter Crashes During Forest Firefighting, One Dead

In Central Kalimantan Province, Indonesia, a military helicopter participating in forest firefighting operations crashed, resulting in the death of one crew member. The helicopter, a Mi-17V5 model, was carrying a total of eight crew members.

According to reports, the body of one crew member was recovered and transported to Kuala Pembuang Hospital. Five other crew members were injured and are receiving medical care at the same hospital, while efforts to evacuate the remaining two crew members are ongoing.

The helicopter had taken off from Kuala Pembuang earlier that morning en route to the village of Telaga Pulang in the Suruyan area to conduct fire suppression operations within the Tanjung Puting National Park. The accident occurred while the helicopter was collecting water from the sea to douse the flames.

This incident underscores the serious risks faced by military and emergency forces fighting widespread forest fires in the region, which annually cause significant environmental and human challenges.
