Kabul’s Rapid Expansion Highlights Need for Better Urban Planning, UN-Habitat Says

According to the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the area of Kabul city has expanded significantly over the past several decades. On Tuesday, 5th of عقرب, marking World Cities Day, the global agency stressed the need for better urban planning and increased investment in Kabul.

In its message, UN-Habitat said that with the necessary support in place, Afghanistan’s capital has the potential to become a prosperous and thriving city for millions of residents. The UN statement comes as uncontrolled growth of urban settlements in Kabul has brought numerous problems, including in the management of resources and urban services.

The rapid expansion of Kabul makes even more clear the urgent need for attention from domestic and international institutions in the areas of sustainable development, improved infrastructure, and better urban services. However, the absence of coherent planning and the limitations faced by the Taliban administration could pose serious challenges to the city’s development process.
