European gas prices hit highest level since December 2022

Natural gas prices in Europe have risen above $1,100 per 1,000 cubic metres, reaching their highest level since Dec. 21, 2022, signalling severe instability in the continent’s energy markets. The price increase has been driven mainly by security tensions in the region and disruption to the vital Strait of Hormuz, which has disrupted global energy trade.

Michael O’Leary, chief executive of Ryanair Holdings, has predicted that air ticket costs in Europe will see an unprecedented jump over the next year, adding to economic pressure on citizens. This turmoil and the relentless rise in prices stem from geopolitical complexities and US warmongering against Iran, effects of which are being felt directly in Europe’s energy market and in people’s daily lives.

Ongoing tensions in the Gulf region, including disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz, have affected the main route for transferring oil and gas to global markets, creating dangerous volatility in energy supply and prices. This situation has intensified concerns about energy security at the international level.
