Taliban Begins Operating Security Cameras in Herat City

The Taliban administration says it has begun operating hundreds of security cameras in Herat city, and that installation and activation of the system will continue in other parts of the city and in the districts of the province.
According to Taliban officials, the cameras have been installed to strengthen urban security, prevent crime and make it easier to identify and follow up criminal incidents.
At a ceremony held to mark the start of operations, Engineer Salahuddin, deputy military head of the General Directorate of Communications and Information Technology at the Taliban-run Interior Ministry, said the system was launched “based on the needs and demand of the people” and that a significant number of locations across Herat city had been equipped with advanced security cameras.
He called on security personnel and residents to cooperate in protecting, maintaining and using the equipment effectively. Naqibullah Azizi, Herat’s police chief, also said the purpose of installing the cameras is to prevent crime and facilitate the investigation of criminal incidents.
Herat is one of the major provinces in western Afghanistan, and Herat city, as the provincial capital, is considered one of the busiest and most commercial areas.
