Drainage Project Launched on 500 Acres of Farmland in Laghman

Laghman’s Directorate of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock has announced the launch of a drainage operation on approximately 500 acres of farmland and the cleaning of over 1,260 meters of irrigation canals in the Alingar and Qarghayi districts of the province.
According to the department’s media officer, the purpose of the project is to transfer stagnant and unused water from agricultural lands to areas experiencing water shortages, thereby making more land suitable for farming. The implementation of such projects is considered vital for better water resource management and improving agricultural conditions.
The Laghman Agriculture Directorate has stated that, once the canal cleaning and land drainage work is completed, farmers will have greater access to irrigation water and some of the drought-related challenges in these districts will be alleviated.
Although the initiative appears to be a positive step toward strengthening agriculture, farmers have expressed serious concerns about the sustainability and real impact of such programs due to the lack of transparency, effective oversight, and long-term planning under the Taliban administration.
