UN Mission Warns of Worsening Environmental Pollution in Afghanistan
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has warned that environmental pollution has become a serious and growing problem in Afghanistan, with plastic waste playing a prominent role in contaminating water, soil and land.
On Sunday, 29 Sonbola, on the occasion of World Environmental Cleanup Day, UNAMA said that dumping rubbish in roads, alleys and drainage channels, including the Kabul River, has increased pressure on the environment. According to the mission, preventing the spread of waste can help protect the environment, create healthier communities and strengthen a more sustainable future.
The mission also said that World Environment Day is a reminder that every piece of waste affects the environment. UNAMA made the remarks as environmental pollution is considered one of the serious challenges in various Afghan cities.
The buildup of rubbish on roads, in rivers and in public places, along with the lack of a municipal sewage system and low levels of urban culture, are said to be among the main causes of pollution in the country. In addition, the use of coal in winter and the movement of thousands of old vehicles have led to widespread air pollution and exposed city residents to various illnesses.
UNAMA is the political office of the United Nations in Afghanistan, which, in addition to following political and human rights issues, also takes positions on some social and environmental challenges.
