EU warns of worsening water crisis in Afghanistan, particularly in Kabul

The European Union delegation in Afghanistan has expressed concern over the depletion of the country’s water resources, particularly in the capital, warning that the problem is affecting multiple aspects of daily life.

In a statement released on its official account on X to mark the end of World Water Week, the delegation said efforts to address these challenges are ongoing and reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to working with Afghan institutions on the issue.

According to the statement, EU projects in Afghanistan focus on areas including agriculture, climate change mitigation, water resource management, healthcare, food security, and support for returnees and internally displaced people.

Afghanistan’s water crisis has deepened in recent years, especially in urban areas such as Kabul. Experts cite climate change, population growth, and poor management as the main drivers. The Taliban authorities, however, have so far failed to offer an effective solution to the escalating crisis.
