China stresses continued security talks with Taliban administration
The Taliban-run Interior Ministry said that Zhao Xing, China’s ambassador to Afghanistan, stressed the continuation of Beijing’s security talks and cooperation with the Taliban administration during a farewell meeting with Sirajuddin Haqqani.
According to the ministry, the Chinese ambassador described Afghanistan as an important part of the region’s security equations and supported the continuation of these engagements.
Based on the Taliban Interior Ministry’s claim, Sirajuddin Haqqani described Zhao Xing’s role in expanding ties between the Taliban administration and China as “positive and constructive” during the meeting. The ministry also claimed that security cooperation during the Chinese ambassador’s tenure was one of the main pillars of relations between the two sides.
Zhao Xing also thanked the Taliban Interior Ministry for its cooperation and expressed hope that Beijing’s ties with the Taliban administration would continue after the end of his mission. The meeting came as part of a series of farewell visits by the Chinese ambassador to Taliban officials.
Earlier, Zhao Xing also held a farewell meeting with Amir Khan Muttaqi, acting foreign minister of the Taliban administration. According to official Taliban sources, that meeting covered the regional situation, political cooperation and the future course of relations between Kabul and Beijing.
Zhao Xing was appointed China’s ambassador to Afghanistan in 2023 and presented his credentials that same year to Mullah Mohammad Hassan, the Taliban administration’s prime minister. He was the first ambassador from any country to formally submit his credentials to a senior Taliban official; however, China has not yet recognized the Taliban administration and has conducted its relations within the framework of limited, pragmatic engagement.
