UN Special Representative Highlights Need to Expand Maternal Health Services in Afghanistan

Ruba Fatima, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative and Head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), during a visit to the emergency maternity hospital at Amre Camp in Turkmenistan, emphasized the necessity of expanding health services for mothers and providing psychosocial support to women and adolescent girls returning to Afghanistan.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Afghanistan announced on the social media platform X that the UN representative, while positively assessing the organization’s activities in maternal health services, promised to strive for increased vital midwifery services and psychosocial support, especially for returning women and adolescent girls.
This comes amid a rise in returns to Afghanistan in recent years, where providing adequate health services for returning women and girls remains a critical challenge that requires more attention and support from international organizations and the Taliban administration.
