Afghan and Chinese citizens meet for first time at Wakhan border
A number of citizens of Afghanistan and China have met in the Wakhan border area of Badakhshan province, an event that, alongside drawing attention to the border’s potential, has once again highlighted the lack of infrastructure and the difficulty of access at the crossing.
In a video released from the meeting, people on both sides of the border can be seen waving to each other and holding a brief conversation. The report said this was the first meeting between ordinary people from the two countries at the Wakhan crossing.
One of those present at the meeting told Afghan media: “For the first time, ordinary people from China and Afghanistan met at the Wakhan crossing. A day will come when this region will take on a commercial and developed face.”
However, Wakhan still faces serious obstacles to becoming an active trade route. The lack of adequate infrastructure, geographical difficulties and limited transport routes are considered among the main challenges on this path.
Wakhan is the only point through which Afghanistan shares a border with China, and in recent years it has been seen as one of the potential routes for expanding trade and linking to Chinese markets. Economic interactions between Afghanistan and China have also increased over this period, and according to various sources, the two sides have discussed trade cooperation, investment and regional connectivity.
Taliban officials have also previously emphasised using Afghanistan’s border potential to expand economic relations with regional countries. The Wakhan corridor in eastern Badakhshan province is a narrow strip of Afghan territory that extends to the Chinese border and in the past was considered part of the historic routes connecting Central Asia, South Asia and China.
