Russia Says Lavrov and Rubio May Meet at the UN

Russia’s Foreign Ministry has said there is a possibility that Sergei Lavrov and Marco Rubio, the foreign ministers of Russia and the United States, may meet on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly later this month.

Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, said the meeting could take place during the upcoming UN session. She added that contacts between officials in various departments of the Russian and US foreign ministries were continuing.

According to Zakharova, both sides consider these contacts important, and the two foreign ministers regularly share views on the war in Ukraine. She also said Lavrov and Rubio speak by phone when needed.

Lavrov and Rubio also met in July on the sidelines of a meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The UN General Assembly is held every year in New York with the participation of senior officials from member states and is considered one of the most important venues for bilateral diplomatic meetings.
