Pakistan protests after US diplomat’s remarks on Kashmir

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said it had summoned the chargé d’affaires at the US Embassy in Islamabad and conveyed its formal protest to Washington following remarks by an American diplomat on Kashmir.

The reaction came after Sergio Gor, the US ambassador to New Delhi, said during his visit to Indian-administered Kashmir: “This is a very important part of India.”

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry rejected the position, stressing that Jammu and Kashmir is internationally recognised as a disputed territory.

Kashmir has been one of the main sources of dispute between India and Pakistan since the two countries gained independence in 1947. Tensions between Islamabad and New Delhi also rose in 2025 after a deadly attack on tourists in Kashmir, an incident that was followed by clashes between the two sides that left nearly 70 people dead.
