Afghan Addiction Specialists Visit Iran for Training Amid Taliban Health Service Challenges

Afghanistan’s Office of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the World Health Organization (WHO), has facilitated a joint educational visit between Afghan and Iranian specialists in addiction treatment.

The visit aims to enhance the exchange of expertise and experience in reducing drug demand, with a focus on treatment methods, healthcare services, and addiction prevention strategies between the two countries.

Afghan healthcare professionals participating in the program say they are seeking to use global knowledge to improve addiction treatment services in their country, amid limitations and the absence of effective programs under Taliban rule.

More than two years after the Taliban takeover, access to healthcare and addiction treatment services in Afghanistan has declined, fueling growing concerns over the rising number of drug-dependent individuals across the country.
