Amnesty International urges global action to hold Taliban administration accountable

Amnesty International, referring to the past five years since the Taliban administration took power, said Afghanistan has faced a catastrophic human rights crisis during this period and that impunity and injustice have cast a shadow over people’s lives. The organisation has called on the international community to take a more unified and firmer approach to hold the Taliban administration accountable.

Amnesty International’s South Asia regional office, launching the global campaign “Break the Silence; End Human Rights Violations in Afghanistan,” stressed that the Taliban administration’s continued rule has not led to improvement, but rather to the persistence of repression and violations of the fundamental rights of the Afghan people.

In a petition, Amnesty International has called on the international community to immediately establish a strong and sustainable mechanism to address human rights violations in Afghanistan. The organisation also stressed the use of all pressure tools to compel the Taliban administration to respect the rights of women and girls, end gender persecution, stop corporal punishment, and establish an independent and impartial justice system.

The rights group has also called on citizens in different countries to join the campaign and urge their governments to take clear and practical action against the ongoing repression in Afghanistan.

Amnesty International is one of the most well-known international bodies in documenting and pursuing human rights violations, and in the years since the Taliban administration returned to power, it has repeatedly warned about widespread restrictions on women, girls and civil liberties in Afghanistan.
