Jamiat-e Islami criticises Taliban crackdown and exclusion of women
The Jamiat-e Islami Party of Afghanistan says that since the Taliban returned to power, the scope of repression and restrictions in the country has widened, women have been pushed out of social life, and distrust has deepened in society.
In a statement published on Saturday, 24 Asad, on the Facebook page of the party’s leader, Salahuddin Rabbani, the events of 15 August 2021 were described as the start of a stage of “dangerous decline” for Afghanistan. The party said the consequences of the Taliban’s return have been wide-ranging in the political, social and economic spheres.
In the statement, Jamiat-e Islami accused the Taliban administration of turning religion into a tool to consolidate power and impose dominance over the people through a selective and distorted interpretation of Sharia. Salahuddin Rabbani also described the Taliban’s policies as stemming from “ethnic thinking, terror, violent extremism and corruption.”
According to the party, the rule of law under the Taliban has been weakened and the country’s government and economic institutions are facing serious problems. The statement also said the Taliban administration is abusing financial revenues and international humanitarian aid.
Jamiat-e Islami added that networks linked to the Taliban are exploiting Afghanistan’s natural resources, while environmental pollution has also increased. The party described the level of “oppression, tyranny and bullying” during the Taliban era as unprecedented.
In the final section of the statement, it stressed the need for unity among Afghanistan’s different ethnic groups and accused the Taliban administration of undermining national unity. Jamiat-e Islami Afghanistan is one of the country’s major political movements and has remained critical of the Taliban administration since the political shift in August 2021.
