Four Nations Stress Security of Strait of Hormuz and Reaffirm US-Iran Understanding
The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, and Pakistan, meeting in Amman, Jordan’s capital, emphasized the necessity of ensuring the security of strategic waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab, and called for a return to the understanding signed between the United States and Iran.
In what was described as the fifth meeting under the quadrilateral mechanism, participants regarded maintaining freedom of navigation and the continuity of international trade as vital for global economic stability. They called for intensified joint coordination and alignment of positions in response to ongoing regional developments.
The participants also stressed support for efforts to reach a sustainable agreement between Washington and Tehran; an accord that, they said, could prevent escalating tensions and help strengthen regional stability.
The meeting was attended by Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan, and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, on the sidelines of a ministerial summit concerning Jerusalem.
Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the discussions focused on recent regional developments amid heightened militarization and ways to reduce tensions, especially concerning the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi Arabia’s official news agency reported that the ministers welcomed the formation of a “multinational naval defensive coalition” to enhance maritime security and protect international waterways.
The Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab are among the most important routes for global energy transport and trade, and any insecurity in these waterways could have widespread economic consequences regionally and worldwide.
