Death Toll from Migrant Rush into Spanish Ceuta Reaches 94
Local Spanish media report that several days after a mass migrant rush from North Africa into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, the number of bodies found has reached 94.
Miguel Ángel Pérez Treviño, Spain’s Ministry of the Interior representative in Ceuta, announced that Spanish forces have discovered 72 bodies. He added that Moroccan authorities have found 22 more bodies on their side of the border.
This incident followed an attempt late last week by tens of thousands of migrants, mostly young people, to cross the Moroccan border into Ceuta. Spanish officials estimate that approximately 60,000 people were involved in this wave.
According to reports, rumors spread on social media about the ease of crossing the border and hope of reaching European soil were among the factors that fueled this surge. Some migrants cited economic hardship, difficult living conditions, and lack of job opportunities as reasons for their decision to migrate.
Earlier, Pope Leo XIV, the leader of the Catholic Christians, expressed concern about the situation in Ceuta and called for “solutions based on peace, stability, and justice” to manage the crisis.
Ceuta is an autonomous Spanish territory in North Africa, near the Moroccan border, and is one of the few land routes for migrants entering the European Union.
