Shane McDermott Joins Afghanistan National Cricket Team Coaching Staff
The Afghanistan Cricket Board has announced that Shane McDermott has joined the national cricket team’s coaching staff as an assistant coach and fielding coach.
According to the board’s statement, he is set to join the team from August 1st this year, ahead of the upcoming five-match One Day International series between Afghanistan and Ireland.
McDermott holds a Level 3 coaching certification and has previously worked with the Afghanistan national team. He served as the fielding coach for the team from January 2024 to July 2025.
After concluding his tenure with Afghanistan, McDermott took on a similar role at the Pakistan Cricket Board from July 2025 to July 2026.
In his professional career, McDermott has also coached the Sri Lanka national team; he was the fielding coach from 2019 to 2021 and simultaneously led Sri Lanka’s ‘A’ team. Prior to that, from 2012 to 2019, he worked in coaching and technical analysis roles with Australia’s national and ‘A’ teams at the National Cricket Centre.
