Over 166,000 Evacuated in France and Spain Due to Widespread Wildfires

Authorities in France and Spain have reported that at least 141,000 people in southwestern France and 25,000 around Madrid have been forced to leave their homes amid expanding wildfires. In France, President Emmanuel Macron, after requesting assistance from the European Union, has ordered the military to intervene to control the forest fires. A local official has warned that the flames are approaching the city of Bordeaux. The French Interior Minister described the situation as “unprecedented,” stating that fires of this scale have never been seen in the country before. In Spain, officials have declared that the wildfire situation around Madrid has reached its peak and containment is currently impossible. According to local authorities, three separate fires west of Spain’s capital have burned over 6,000 hectares of land. The severity of these wildfires has also forced NASA to evacuate one of its three major space communications centers in Spain. The Madrid Space Communications Complex, located in the Robledo area, is considered a critical facility for the agency.
