France’s National Health Agency has reported that during the recent heatwave, at least 5,764 heat-related deaths were recorded in the country. Reuters reported on Wednesday night, July 22, that these figures pertain to the period from June 17 to July 2, a time when France experienced an unprecedented rise in temperatures. According to the agency, the number of deaths during this timeframe increased by 36 percent compared to normal levels. Approximately two-thirds of the victims were individuals over the age of 75, highlighting the heightened vulnerability of the elderly to extreme heat. The National Health Agency emphasized that these are preliminary figures and that the final statistics will be published after the summer once all assessments have been completed.
