Ebola Outbreak in Congo Nears 1,000 Deaths, Spreading Across Five Provinces

The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that the number of Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reached 2,423, with at least 967 deaths attributed to the disease, highlighting the ongoing and expanding health crisis in the country. According to Tirone Balde, WHO’s Incident Manager for Viral Disease Response based in Bundibugyo, the outbreak now affects five provinces, with Ituri province remaining the epicenter. Over 89% of cases and nearly 84% of deaths have been recorded in Ituri. Speaking at a press conference in Geneva, Balde said that despite rising numbers, health agencies have gained a better understanding of transmission patterns and have adjusted response plans accordingly. He emphasized that the outbreak is not yet under control, and health teams are working to address existing gaps. Three distinct transmission patterns have been identified: widespread transmission continues in Bunia and its surrounding areas; new cases have been detected in Kisangani, Haut-Uele, Katwa, and Butembo; and signs of stability are seen in Mongbwalu — where the outbreak was first identified — and in Goma. WHO stated that rapid response teams in Kisangani have prevented secondary transmission, noting that all five cases reported there originated from Ituri. The organization also highlighted priorities including expanding safe and dignified burials, strengthening referral systems, and increasing clinical management capacity in areas with the highest transmission rates. Ebola virus is among the deadliest viral diseases in Africa, and the Democratic Republic of Congo has experienced several Ebola outbreaks in recent years.
