Salang Highway Closed to Trailer Trucks for Major Reconstruction

The Ministry of Public Works has announced that, in order to accelerate the fundamental reconstruction of the Salang Highway, this route will be closed to trailer trucks from July 10 until further notice. The ministry has urged trailer truck drivers to complete the transportation of their commercial goods to both sides of Salang before this date.
According to the ministry’s statement, the essential reconstruction work on this vital highway has already begun and is currently underway in various sections. The source noted that to meet standards and speed up this strategic project, new restrictions on heavy vehicle traffic will be imposed.
The Ministry of Public Works emphasized that truck drivers must strictly avoid passing through the Salang route after the specified date to prevent hindering the ongoing works. Salang is one of the country’s most important transit corridors, connecting northern and southern Afghanistan, and any restrictions there directly affect goods transportation and commercial activities.
The statement further noted that except for trailer trucks, other freight and passenger vehicles can continue to travel normally on the Salang route in accordance with traffic rules and the guidelines set by Salang officials. However, some economic experts consistently stress that the Taliban administration should plan clear measures and provide timely information to mitigate the economic consequences of such restrictions alongside implementing infrastructure projects.
