Iran-US Talks Focus on Reopening Strait of Hormuz Amid Progress Towards Agreement

Turkey’s Foreign Minister has announced that talks between Iran and the United States have reached a stage close to an agreement, with the current main focus on reopening the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, both parties are seeking a positive outcome and are striving to conclude the negotiations with a final agreement.
In an interview with the publication “Nikkei Asia,” released on Saturday, Hakan Fidan stated that the negotiations’ focus has shifted from the nuclear issue to resolving the Strait of Hormuz crisis. This strategic waterway, which plays a critical role in global oil transportation, has faced serious disruptions since the end of February.
Fidan emphasized that the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz has imposed heavy pressure on both sides. He explained that the consequences of this situation are not limited to Iran and the US but have also affected energy security, food security, and price increases, which has made the Strait of Hormuz a priority in the talks.
The Turkish Foreign Minister added that an initial plan has been agreed upon; based on this plan, after finalizing the agreement on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, talks regarding Iran’s nuclear program will resume.
He also stated that Ankara supports Pakistan’s mediation efforts between Tehran and Washington, and that some regional countries, including Qatar, are involved in this process. Fidan expressed hope that progress in these negotiations could also accelerate discussions about a peace plan in Gaza.
