Russia Recalls Ambassador from Armenia Amid EU Alignment Tensions
Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Sergei Kopirkin, the country’s ambassador to Armenia, has been recalled to Moscow following Yerevan’s recent moves to strengthen ties with the European Union. This decision comes amid escalating tensions between the two nations in recent months.
According to Russian media reports, the ministry emphasized that Armenia’s shift towards the European Union could challenge existing cooperation within the Eurasian Economic Union framework. Both Russia and Armenia are members of this regional economic union, which was established to enhance trade exchanges and economic coordination among its members.
Meanwhile, efforts by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to expand relations with the European Union have cooled ties between Moscow and Yerevan. Russia remains one of Armenia’s main trading partners, with a significant portion of Armenian economic transactions conducted within the Eurasian Economic Union.
Experts warn that any significant change in Armenia’s foreign policy direction and a reduction in cooperation with this union could have substantial economic consequences for Yerevan, a concern that has become a central point of tension between the two sides.
