Imports from Mahirud Border Surge by 846%, Boosting Afghanistan-Iran Trade

The South Khorasan governor’s office announced that imports from Afghanistan through the Mahirud border crossing have increased by 846 percent, making this route one of the most active trade corridors between the two sides. Iranian officials stated that the dollar value of imports since the start of the war has also risen by 441 percent.

Mohammad Reza Hashemi, the governor of South Khorasan, said on Tuesday during a joint meeting with Taliban officials in Farah province that trade exchanges at this border have increased significantly. He added that in the Iranian year 1404 (March 2025–March 2026), imports grew by 165 percent.

According to Hashemi, with extended working hours at the Mahirud crossing, daily traffic on the Mahirud–Farah route has exceeded one thousand trucks. He also called for the establishment of a joint border market, the deployment of an Afghan customs office, and strengthening of joint chambers of commerce.

The South Khorasan governor also announced that an online appointment system has been activated to reduce long waiting times on this route.

Meanwhile, the Mahirud–Farah road, which connects South Khorasan province to Farah province, has seen progress over the past year after 17 years of inactivity. This route is strategically important for Afghanistan’s trade connection to Iran and from there to Central Asia, and its development is expected to positively impact trade volume in the border areas.
