Two Thousand Jeribs of Opium Poppy Eradicated in Takhar Province

Officials from the Anti-Narcotics Directorate of Takhar Police Command have announced that since the start of the operation to destroy opium poppy fields in the provincial center and districts, two thousand jeribs of land have been cleared of this plant. According to these officials, the eradication efforts have been conducted in several areas in stages and are still ongoing. No details have been released regarding the number of possible arrests or damages inflicted on farmers. Takhar province, located in the northeast of the country, has witnessed opium poppy cultivation in some years. Opium poppy is the raw material for opium production, and its cultivation has been banned by the Taliban administration. However, experts have repeatedly emphasized that sustainable counter-narcotics efforts require providing alternative livelihoods for farmers. Otherwise, economic pressures could push rural residents back towards illegal cultivation. So far, the Taliban administration has not provided details about specific support programs for farmers in this province.
