Taliban Administration Emphasizes Strengthening Groundwater Resources

A meeting chaired by Mawlawi Abdul Salam Hanafi, Deputy Administrative Head of the Taliban’s Prime Minister’s Office, was held focusing on the reinforcement of groundwater and the effective use of water resources. The meeting stressed the continuation of constructing check dams and water barriers as well as proper water consumption management.

Mullah Hamdullah Fetrat, Deputy Spokesperson of the Taliban administration, announced that participants agreed to expedite projects related to water storage and control to prevent the depletion of groundwater levels. According to him, protecting water resources has been prioritized.

Further decisions were made during the meeting regarding the creation of irrigation canals and the implementation of drip irrigation systems for agricultural lands. These initiatives come amid ongoing challenges, as parts of the country have faced declining water resources and consecutive droughts in recent years.

Despite these plans, no details have been released so far concerning the budget, precise timelines, or mechanisms for overseeing project implementation, raising concerns about the feasibility of the Taliban administration’s commitments.

The session was attended by ministers of Finance, Rural Rehabilitation and Development, Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock; deputies from the Ministry of Energy and Water and Ministry of Mines and Petroleum; and the Director General of the Administrative Affairs Office.
