US to Close Consulate in Peshawar, Diplomatic Duties Transferred to Islamabad

The United States Department of State has announced the gradual closure of its consulate in Peshawar, Pakistan. Diplomatic responsibilities for interactions with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province will be transferred to the US Embassy in Islamabad.

In a statement released on Tuesday, April 25, the Department cited the safety of diplomatic staff and efficient resource management as reasons for this decision. US officials have assured that despite this change, America’s foreign policy priorities toward Pakistan will remain unchanged.

The State Department emphasized that while the physical presence in Peshawar is adjusting, engagement with the people and officials of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will continue. These interactions aim to strengthen economic relations, regional security cooperation, and advance US interests.

According to the statement, the US diplomatic mission in Pakistan will continue operating through remaining representations, including the embassy in Islamabad and diplomatic offices in Karachi and Lahore. Washington reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining and enhancing bilateral relations with Pakistan.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, located in northwestern Pakistan, holds strategic importance, and Peshawar, as its capital, has historically been a key center for diplomatic activities and regional cooperation.
