3,388 Afghan Migrants Return to Afghanistan in a Single Day, UN Highlights Challenges

Media outlets controlled by the Taliban administration have reported that 3,388 Afghan migrants returned to the country in the past day. Bakhtar News Agency announced on Monday, 14th of Sawr, that these individuals arrived in Afghanistan as part of 855 families.

According to the published statistics, the pace of migrant returns has accelerated in recent days. Just two days ago, more than 800 families had returned to the country; a development indicating a rising wave of returns within a short period.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has stated that only 11 percent of returnees have employment. The UN had previously warned that the lack of job opportunities and basic services could pose serious challenges to the reintegration process of migrants—an issue for which the Taliban administration bears responsibility.

The UN also announced that in 2025 approximately 2.8 million Afghan migrants have returned from Iran and Pakistan. The UN Refugee Agency added that the return of nearly three million people last year has increased Afghanistan’s population by about 10 percent, placing additional pressure on limited resources, the labor market, and urban services.
