US Plans Withdrawal of 5,000 Troops from Germany Sparks Controversy
European and American media have reported that the United States has decided to withdraw thousands of its troops from Germany, a move that, according to sources, could escalate tensions between Washington and Berlin. CBS News announced that the Pentagon is planning to remove around 5,000 American military personnel from German soil.
Germany’s NTV network also reported that the US Department of Defense has set a six- to twelve-month deadline to complete the troop withdrawal process. According to these reports, the decision has caused widespread political reactions and sparked concerns within the United States as well.
The Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung wrote in an analysis that this decision is linked to US President Donald Trump’s dissatisfaction with the position of the German Chancellor. The newspaper added that Trump’s reaction to Friedrich Merz’s remarks was “predictable,” and the personal and political relationship between the two parties has influenced this development.
On April 27, Merz stated that Western countries have underestimated Iran and that the United States faces a prolonged conflict in the Middle East. Some reports indicate that Trump’s dissatisfaction with NATO’s level of support regarding Iran-related actions played a role in the recent decision.
In response to this decision, US Republican Senators Roger Wicker and Mike Rogers issued a joint statement expressing concerns about its consequences. They emphasized that Germany has responded to Washington’s calls to increase defense spending, and a rapid reduction of American forces in Europe could pose risks.
Germany is one of the most significant bases for American troops in Europe, and any changes in the scale of the US military presence in the country will also impact the security balance within NATO.
