Explosion in Colombia’s Cauca Region Kills 13, Injures 17

An explosion in the Kahibiu district of Cauca state in Colombia has killed at least 13 people and injured 17 others. The incident occurred near the city of Popayán along the Pan-American Highway.

Reuters, citing local officials, reported that the attack has been attributed to factions splintered from the FARC group; a group opposed to the peace agreement between the Colombian government and the former rebels. This highway is one of the major transit routes in southwestern Colombia.

After decades of armed conflict with the Colombian government, the FARC signed a peace agreement in 2016, but some of its splinter factions continue armed activities.

Gustavo Petro, the President of Colombia, stated that efforts to advance the peace process with armed groups are ongoing but have not yet achieved complete success. He emphasized that ensuring security and stability in vulnerable areas remains a priority for his government.
