IOC Confirms Recognition of Afghanistan’s Sports Leadership from Abroad

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has once again clarified its position regarding the leadership of sports in Afghanistan, announcing that it recognizes the management of the Afghanistan National Olympic Committee from outside the country. According to a recent letter issued by the IOC, the Executive Board’s 2022 decision remains in effect, under which Hafizullah Wali Rahimi is recognized as President and Younis Popalzai as Secretary General of the Afghanistan National Olympic Committee.
Another important aspect of the letter addresses the situation of female athletes. Both the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Council of Asia consider the exclusion of women from sports activities in Afghanistan to be contrary to their principles and charters. They emphasized that, despite over five years since political changes in Afghanistan, they have been unable since 2021 to reach an agreement with Taliban sports authorities regarding women’s participation in sports.
This ongoing situation remains one of the major challenges facing Afghan sports on the international stage and obstructs the progress and effective presence of Afghan female athletes in global competitions. Continued restrictions on women’s sports reflect the Taliban administration’s disregard for their fundamental rights and have drawn international criticism.
