Tajikistan’s President and CSTO Secretary-General Discuss Afghanistan Border Security

The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) announced that Emomali Rahmon, President of Tajikistan, and Talatbek Masadikov, the Secretary-General of the organization, held an official meeting on Monday to discuss the security situation in Afghanistan and ways to strengthen the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border.
According to the organization, the two sides emphasized the implementation of a joint program to enhance border security, calling it vital for stability in Central Asia. This program specifically focuses on increased coordination among member countries regarding border management and surveillance.
Tajikistan, which shares a long border with Afghanistan, has repeatedly expressed concerns over security threats stemming from instability within Afghanistan in recent years. Since the Taliban’s return to power, worries about the activities of extremist groups and trafficking along Afghanistan’s northern borders have intensified.
The CSTO, composed of several Central Asian countries and their regional allies, considers strengthening Tajikistan’s border with Afghanistan as part of broader efforts to prevent the spread of insecurity in the region.
