Residents of Uruzgan Demand Trial for Australian Soldiers Over War Crimes
Residents of Uruzgan province say they have suffered during the presence of Australian forces in the region and are now demanding the trial of all military personnel they claim were involved in war crimes. They emphasize that civilian casualties resulting from military operations have affected the lives of dozens of families, and justice has yet to be served.
According to locals, in some villages of Uruzgan, there is not a single home untouched by the consequences of military operations. They claim these operations caused the deaths of civilians and widespread destruction of residential houses, leaving many families facing ongoing social and economic hardships.
Some victims also report that some survivors of these events are now struggling with severe mental health disorders. They call on international human rights organizations to take concrete actions to identify and prosecute those responsible for the killing of civilians in Uruzgan and to prevent such incidents from recurring.
Bilal Uruzgani, spokesperson for the provincial police command, described these incidents as a stain on history and stated that several civilians lost their lives during violent clashes.
Meanwhile, Ben Roberts-Smith, a former Australian soldier who had previously been awarded multiple military medals, has been arrested and charged with committing war crimes in Afghanistan. He faces five counts of murdering five civilians between 2009 and 2012; if proven, these charges could result in a life sentence.
