US Midterm Elections Set to Curb Trump’s Power in Congress

The US midterm elections, held every two years, do not change Donald Trump’s presidency but can alter the composition and majority in Congress, thereby limiting the president’s ability to advance his agenda.

These elections include all 435 members of the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate. The House, where all members are elected every two years, more directly reflects shifts in voter preferences, while the Senate, due to its structure and six-year terms, tends to be more stable.

A shift in the majority in either chamber or both can create pressure on the president. The new Congress can use legal tools to restrict the passage of laws and budgets, initiate investigations into the administration’s conduct, and oversee executive agencies.

As a result, although Donald Trump will retain the presidency, he will face a Congress capable of significantly limiting his executive powers and authority. This system of checks and balances is a fundamental principle of the US Constitution.

Experts say the midterm elections offer opposition parties an opportunity to gain a majority in Congress, influence government policy and implementation, and impose greater constraints on the president’s programs.
