21 Held in Israeli Army Contractor Corruption and Bribery Probe

A wide-ranging Israeli military investigation into corruption, bribery and money laundering in contracting firms that worked with the army on projects in the Gaza Strip has led to the arrest of 21 suspects, including five non-commissioned officers and 16 civilians.

According to the Maariv newspaper, the suspects were detained on allegations of multi-million-shekel financial misconduct, including fuel theft and the use of fake invoices. The offences occurred in infrastructure projects, digging works, road paving and heavy engineering equipment operations over the past two years, especially in the area known as Gaza’s “Yellow Line.”

Among those arrested are non-commissioned officers in the Israeli army who served as supervisors of contractor operations and are accused of taking bribes from contractors in exchange for overlooking violations.

The investigation also covers how the projects were carried out and supervised, but it is not yet clear whether the allegations extend to the tendering process or are focused only on the conduct of contractors after contracts were signed.

The probe began after the war in Gaza started on October 7, 2023, and ground operations intensified, when the Israeli army turned to civilian companies to use heavy engineering equipment in support of its military operations.

After being transferred to investigative centres, the detainees are expected to be brought before courts in Beersheba or the military court in Beit Lid.
